What people don't understand about music

This blog is expanded on part of a conversation Emma and I were having. It won't make much sense to most people, is very much unfinished, and is geared towards mainstream pop music. If you disagree with anything written here, any comments you make will be duly noted, and laughed at.

Music isn't about the voice. It's not about the singer. It's not even about the message portrayed through the song in lyrical form.

It's about the harmonies, the structures that are formed, and the shared communal memories one can evoke through the sound, often WITHOUT language.

That's what music is about. Music is art, to add language can tarnish it or make it less personal.

inb4 "freedom of expression, art can be anything", because art doesn't work that way, and you're a dumb shit for thinking it. Art is about creating an atmosphere through expressive means, not just throwing your uncultured opinion to the masses. That's how we end up with "artists" like Justin Timberlake, or Katy Perry. These are people who exploit the beauty of music to make money.

Have you ever heard such a haunting melody which sent a shiver through all of your senses? A perfect example would be this:

Listen to how the vocals are layered into the song, without distracting from the essence of the music. This is real music. If you cannot understand this, then I really feel sorry for you.

We aren't told how to think, you don't listen to a song and expect to be "taught" the meaning behind it. It's about coming to your own conclusion of what the song is about, and appreciating the musical value.

This is why so many songs are empty.

This is why so many genres don't work.

Country music? It doesn't work. Country music is all about the lyrics, and most of the time, a singer will try to sing over the top of the music. It's horrible.

Heavy Metal?

I HATE Heavy Metal. But regardless, the vocals match the style of playing. I can appreciate that with good artists, the vocals don't distract from the music. Although, a lot of bands do write their music that way.

Music has been homogenised, watered down and mutated so much over the last hundred years, and it's so sad..

I'm getting sick of writing this, so I'm ending it here. Blah.
